Designer wedding shoes from Jimmy Choo to Vera Wang

Your wedding will be amongst the most important and most memorable days of your life, when you will be the focus of all your family and friends, and will be photographed dozens of times. It can sound pretty terrifying, but at least you can minimise the inevitable panic by making sure you look great in the right outfit and shoes!

Brides, if wearing the traditional white dress, should buy a pair of white shoes that compliment the dress. Since wedding dresses come in a whole range of whites, off-whites, ivory whites, pearl whites, and so on, do make sure that your shoes match the colour of your dress.

The most practical option is a simple yet elegant pair of low, white satin heels. Choosing a pair that have enormous stiletto heels is inadvisable unless you are very accustomed to wearing stilettos. Remember that you will be doing a lot of standing and walking, as well as carrying around the extra weight of your dress and possibly having to contend with a heavy train dragging behind you, all of which could make walking naturally and elegantly more tricky than usual.

If your dress is very simple, choose a simple pair of shoes. Overly elaborate shoes will detract attention from your dress and ruin the simplicity of your outfit. If you are going to be wearing a highly decorated dress you can afford to be a little bolder in your choice of shoes, but there is still little point in buying very ornate shoes that will only be hidden beneath the folds of your dress.

As with any new formal shoes, it is definitely a good plan to practise wearing the shoes in advance of your wedding. This will break them in and encourage them to mould themselves slightly to the form of your feet, as well as making them more comfortable to wear on the big day.

The choice for men is considerably more restricted than for women, but a good pair of low-cut leather or patent leather shoes will look very distinguished and smart. Men should also try to break their wedding shoes in before the event, maybe by wearing the shoes to work for a week, or out to another social engagement.

Wedding shoes for men and women are widely available online on specialist wedding sites and so you should be able to find a supplier that is in your local area, or at least the same region, which will cut down on postage costs and time.
