Can I get married in England

Over half of all weddings in the UK are currently non-religious but it's totally up to you and your fiance and whether you have any religious convictions. Sit down with him and decide which type of ceremony is right for you. If you have any doubts, make appointments with the local registrar and your local minister and chat through the options.

The legalities 

  1. To be legally married in the UK you need to comply with the following:
  2. You and your fiance must be at least 16 years old (in England and Wales and Northern Ireland, if either of you is under 18, one parent or guardian must give consent).
  3. You must not be closely related.
  4. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the marriage must take place in premises where the ceremony can be legally sole (register office, premises licensed for marriage, or a parish ch or other place of worship registered for marriage). In Scotland you can marry anywhere providing there is a minister witnesses present.
  5. The ceremony must take place in the presence of a registrar or another authorised person such as a priest or rabbi.
  6. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the ceremony must, place between 8am and 6pm. In Scotland there are no restrictions.
  7. Two witnesses must be present.
  8. You must both be free and eligible to marry.
