Chinese Wedding Traditions

chinese weddingTo generalise a nation with a billion people, 3.6 million square miles of land and nearly as many cultures and communities into one article on Chinese wedding traditions would both be folly and impossible. But we’re going to do our best anyway!
In fact, despite the difficulties in analysing a country of such wide size and culture, there are some Chinese wedding traditions that have survived and spread throughout over thousands of years and are performed in vast numbers of ceremonies around the world.  These wedding traditions adapt and evolve over the years but still hold true the culture from which they arose, and so Chinese weddings are quite different to Western ceremonies that some might be more familiar with.
So what are the Chinese wedding traditions?

Chinese Wedding Traditions – Marriage Proposal
Chinese wedding tradition dictates that a marriage is not just the bringing together of two people, but the union of two families and in particular the incorporation of the bride into the groom’s family. In ancient times the betrothal was one organised to the families via a letter, tradition dictated that it was too important to be left in the hands of the young. Though this remains true in some areas of China, modern culture has generally taken the control back into the hands of the potential bride and groom.
In addition, unlike much of the rest of the world, the Chinese wedding day is handled by the groom’s family rather than the father of the bride. So for those men marrying into a Chinese family they may get something of a shock!
