Welsh Wedding Traditions - Welsh Love Spoons

It might sound like some bizarre seedy traditional practice and may well conjure up some frankly confusing images in one’s head when picturing it, but the Welsh Love Spoons are actually a real Welsh wedding tradition. Indeed compared to most worldwide wedding customs this one is relatively normal.

Any gentleman wishing to marry a Welsh girl of his choice is traditionally expected to carve a wooden spoon into any number of shapes – keys, hearts, people and various other symbols of love. This arises from the maritime traditions of much of Wales, as sailors would carve images of their betrothed from wooden spoons whilst out to sea. In contrast to the perhaps more widespread wooden spoon tradition of giving it to the loser of a race, Welsh love spoons are all about the winner – a sign of marriage proposal to their chosen one.
